As the year winds down, many of us start thinking about our health, our habits, and the progress we’ve made. One of the best tools to get a clear, accurate picture of where you’re at is an InBody body composition scan, and now is a perfect time to do one!
Whether you’ve used the InBody before or you’re stepping on it for the first time, here’s a helpful guide to understanding your results, plus a few resources to dive deeper.
Why Get an InBody Scan?
Unlike a regular scale, the InBody breaks your weight into meaningful pieces:
- Skeletal Muscle Mass
- Body Fat Mass
- Visceral Fat Level
- Body Water Balance
- Segmental Lean Analysis (right/left arms, legs, and trunk)
- Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)
These markers tell a much richer story than simply “weight up or down.” They show whether you’re gaining muscle, losing fat, improving balance, or trending in the right direction long-term.
If You Scan Yourself ..Use These Resources
Some people jump on the machine on their own (which is totally fine), but the numbers can feel confusing without context. Here are a few excellent interpretation guides:

The Most Important Numbers to Pay Attention To
1. Skeletal Muscle Mass (SMM)
This tells you how much lean, functional muscle tissue you have. More muscle = higher metabolism, better performance, and improved long-term health.
2. Body Fat Mass (BFM)
The actual pounds of fat on your body — more helpful than a generic body fat percentage.
3. Visceral Fat Level
An important marker for long-term health.
4. Trends Over Time
The single scan is useful, but the history of 3–12+ months of scans is where the real insights show up.
Why We Recommend Reviewing Your Results With a Coach
The InBody numbers are powerful but only if you know what to do with them.
A coach can help you:
- Understand what the numbers actually mean and what to do next
- Identify trends worth celebrating
- Understand when weight gain is actually muscle gain (a good thing!)
- Spot red flags, like dropping muscle while increasing training volume
- Set smart goals around strength, conditioning, nutrition, and recovery
